A Novato non-profit has kick-started an initiative to build homes for Marin veterans.
Homeward Bound is a homeless advocacy organization. This week they received $4 million from the state to build homes strictly for un-housed military veterans.
At a former U.S. air force base, Homeward Bound director Mary Kay Sweeney plans to build 24 units of veteran housing.
This community will provide shelter for nearly two-thirds of the County’s homeless veteran population. Each person will have their own unit, access to a community center and visits from various physical and mental health professionals.
The $4 million provided by California will be added to the $3 billion stockpile of donations already on the books.
With this money, Sweeney is confident that Homeward Bound will be successful. "This is going to be an amazing thing," she said.
Sweeney is also making plans for Homeward Bound’s future.
“If we end veteran homelessness, which is a sub-population of homeless people, then we can focus on chronic homeless people, homeless families,” Sweeney explained. “We’re getting a handle on this which is really good.”
