Oakland is a step closer to acquiring a professional women's basketball team.
A non-binding financial plan by the African American Sports and Entertainment Group for a WNBA team to play at the Oakland Arena was approved by the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority Friday morning.
The group also wants to buy the city's 50% stake in the Coliseum complex. City staff began negotiations for the deal last week, following instruction from the City Council.
The establishment of a professional women’s basketball team and the deal are both part of a larger effort to revitalize the area around the Coliseum.
