The fire was started by a candle in a building in the 9200 block of G Street. The structure was being used as a home for several people who now must find somewhere else to live.

"I don't know much outside of what these people were doing when the fire happened," Oakland Fire Battalion Chief Kenny Delgado told KCBS Radio. "I do know that upon my arrival I still had two occupants still trying to get animals out of the back."

Five people and three animals were displaced. "The place will not be habitable at all. We've got PG&E on scene disconnecting power and they've got broken water lines etc… so at this time the building will not be habitable," he said.

The Red Cross was called to offer aid to the victims. Delgado said this underscores how using candles can be dangerous. "I wouldn't call this a typical fire, but it's normal for cold weather conditions with rain, more people are inside," he explained.
