Oakland Fire told KCBS Radio the firefighters were responding to a fire when they swerved to avoid crashing into another vehicle, which caused their engine to crash into a multi-story building near Grand Avenue and Perkins Street.

The three firefighters sustained moderate injuries and were taken to Highland Hospital, Oakland Fire Battalion Chief Chris Landry told KPIX. It's not yet clear what the vehicle in front of the fire engine was doing that made the firefighters swerve off the road.

Officials said Grand Avenue was closed down between Harrison Street and Staten Avenue.

Oakland police are still investigating the cause of the crash and will look at the three traffic cameras at the intersection, the station reported.
