Just before 8 p.m. Saturday, a man in a black sedan driving north on Market Street hit the front of a blue car on Stanford Avenue and ran into a traffic light pole. The car became a burning wreck as the traffic light rested on the roof and the pole embedded behind the driver's seat, trapping the man in his vehicle, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Witnesses reported that the sedan burst into flames immediately after impact. More than two dozen people ran to help put out the blaze with fire extinguishers, bottles of water and hoses, the newspaper said.

Several minutes later the man was rescued from the vehicle by Oakland firefighters using the jaws of life and transported to a local hospital. He appeared conscious, but suffered burns from the incident.

"That absolutely saved his life," a firefighter at the scene told the newspaper.

According to officials, the man is now in stable condition.

KCBS Radio has reached out to the Oakland Fire Department regarding the crash, but has not yet heard back.
