Thirteen American bison from the Oakland Zoo herd are returning to Montana to join their historic lineage.

"So we have our seven 2-year-olds that were born here, and we have two calves with their moms and then we have two other cows going back as well," Angela Gibson, Zoological Manager at the Oakland Zoo told KCBS Radio.

It is part of the Zoo's Bison Restoration Project in partnership with the Blackfeet nation, which works together to return free-roaming bison to their native land. This is the second transfer of bison to Montana.

"We have this partnership with the Blackfeet in Montana," Nik Dehejia, CEO of the Oakland Zoo explained. "We have their bison here at the Oakland Zoo, but we do return some of the young every couple of years to expand the conservation herd."

Since the program's start in 2018, 30 calves have been born at the Oakland Zoo and with this latest trip, 24 bison have been returned to Montana. The bison have been living in a 13-acre habitat and the calves are finally old enough to travel.

"We the Oakland Zoo are part of a movement, a movement of restoring Bison," Dehejia said.
