The armed suspect, wearing a hooded sweatshirt, entered the business and pointed a gun at the cashier, asking her to open the register, according to KTVU.

Coincidentally, an off duty UC Berkeley police sergeant happened to be eating at the restaurant at the same time. The policeman confronted the suspect, and told him to "drop his weapon," the station said. He then fired a shot, and wounded the suspect.

The man - identified as 29-year-old Amanuel Moreno of Richmond - was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

"I'll just say thank you because (the off-duty policeman) was there," the cashier told the outlet. "He didn't know if he was going to get shot. He didn't know if he could have died at that moment. He just wanted to protect us."

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Police said there are no outstanding suspects and there is no threat to public safety.
