An officer-involved shooting took place Friday just before 1 p.m. in San Francisco at Varney Pl. near 3rd St.

Plain-clothed officers were looking for car burglars when they came across a vehicle that officers said was known to them to be associated with smash and grab thefts. The car was occupied by at least three suspects and one suspect was struck by gunfire according to a press release.

"Officers called medics to the scene and the man was treated for only minor injuries and taken to the hospital. The other two suspects sped off in the car," Officer Robert Rueca said.

Police said the injured suspect is not being identified at this time and both the wanted vehicle and the other two suspects remain outstanding.

Rueca wasn’t able to say why the shooting happened or if the man who was hit was armed himself.

"Standard protocol, every time we have an office involved shooting a town hall within 10 days will be conducted," Rueca explained.

The chief of police was on the scene for a short time, which is also standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.

This incident is being investigated by the San Francisco District Attorney's Office Independent Investigations Bureau, the San Francisco Police Department Investigative Services Division, the SFPD Internal Affairs Division, and the Department of Police Accountability.
