Police officer stabbed by San Jose man in mental health crisis

A San Jose Police officer was injured early Saturday after he was stabbed by a man who called police to report he was experiencing a mental health crisis.

The San Jose Police Department said two officers responded to a welfare check around 12:30 a.m. Saturday on the 3500 block of Ambra Way, after 33-year-old Sean Williams of San Jose called police for help.

Police said when the officers arrived at the scene, Williams attacked one of them "without provocation." After the officers took Williams into custody, one officer realized he had been stabbed.

The unidentified officer was taken to a local hospital with a non life-threatening injury and has since been discharged.

Williams was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries and for a mental health evaluation. Police said he will later be booked for assault with a deadly weapon on an officer.

Both officers had previous crisis intervention training, police added.
