Oakland Police are investigating a fatal shooting on Monday afternoon just two blocks from police headquarters.
The shooting happened just after 2 p.m. near 8th St. and Broadway on the edge of the city's Chinatown District. Police said that one man is dead after someone with a high-powered rifle or rifles unloaded about 20 rounds.
Officers said they actually heard the gunshots from their facility.
When they got to the scene, officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds and rendered aid to the victim. Medical assistance was called but the man later succumbed to his injuries.
"Deeply concerning, not just because it's in one of our downtown areas, but this really speaks to gun violence. This speaks to the many victims that we have lost. We're talking about 51 lives, now 52 lives that have been lost in our community," Oakland Police Spokesperson Johnna Watson said.
They're still searching for the suspect or suspects.
Police haven't released any other information at this time.
