A teenager was killed in a Novato car accident Wednesday morning after a driver crashed while attempting to flee police.
Agustin Rojas-Rodriguez, 18, was a passenger in the fleeing car when the driver lost control on Highway 101, crashing into a light post. The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene California Highway Patrol reported in a press release.
At approximately 1:45 a.m., CHP initiated a traffic stop when a Toyota Avalon sped through San Rafael on Highway 101.
The driver initially pulled over near the Lucas Valley Road exit where two passengers jumped out of the vehicle. Police ran after the pair when the Toyota driver raced back to the highway.
While making his escape, the driver lost control of his vehicle, sliding along the guardrail and crashing into a stop light pole at the intersection of Nave Dr.
Rojas-Rodriguez was discovered unresponsive in the back seat of the car. Medics attempted to resuscitate him, but they were unsuccessful.
The driver ran from the wreckage and eluded a police search. He was last seen on foot heading south towards Hamilton.
This is an ongoing investigation.
