SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – A Tesla slammed into an apartment building in Fremont Monday evening, killing one.

The crash happened just before 6 p.m. on Old Warm Springs Road – near the Fremont BART station.

Fremont police said the car burst into flames on impact with a vacant first-floor commercial storefront of the apartment building.

Police evacuated the building while fire crews battled the flames.  The fire was put out in about 20 minutes.

The car was later pulled out – with the driver still inside, unable to escape the vehicle.  There were no passengers in the car.

No injuries were reported from anyone in the apartment building.

People who lived in the building were kept out of it for several hours because of the heavy amount of smoke that drifted into the building.

Police will be investigating whether the car was in autonomous mode at the time of the crash.

The driver has not been identified.
