Around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, police officers recieved a call about a possible shooting along the 1200 block of Lakeshore Avenue.
Officers arrived on the scene minutes later and found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transpoted to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police believe the shooting was related to a possible robbery.
"We are on the ground right now currently, continuing our investigation," said Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong in an online press announcement on Thursday.
"We understand this area has been impacted by homicides in the last six months," said Armstrong, referring to Lake Merritt. "This is the third homicide."
The other two homicides led to arrests, he added.
The police department has reached out to the area's councilmember and community leaders to discuss ways to prevent more violence around the lake, said Armstrong.
Officer presence will be increased in the area as well.
This was the city's 31st homicide this year.
