OUSD targets late January for return to classroom

The Oakland Unified School District is planning to begin reopening its schools starting January 25, provided Alameda County is no longer in the state's purple COVID-19 reopening tier.

In an email Tuesday afternoon, Superintendent Dr. Kyla Johnson-Trammell said the first students to return to classrooms will be grades K-5, along with students in special education and mental health enriched classrooms. They'll go in A and B rotations, with up to 10 students per class for a minimum of two days per week.

"Our overall approach to reopening is based on the science and safety standards, and reaching agreements with our labor partners," the superintendent said. "As conditions improve, the plan is likely to evolve."

The plan also allows for the first students to return "be those for whom distance learning is truly not working," including students with low attendance and skill regression in special education.

Alameda County, like the rest of the Bay Area, remains in the purple tier.
