Social unrest unfolded in the quiet town of Pacifica on Wednesday, where roadside protestors demonstrated against the ban on outdoor dining.
Onlookers said it might be one of the first-ever such displays in town, with approximately 50 protestors, some carrying signs that said “Let us open,” and some drinking on-the-house beers from Pacifica Brewery.
Helen Nasser-Elddin is the owner of the brewery (which also hosted the demonstration) and she told KCBS Radio that the current stay-at-home order is unfair and that she goes to the shopping mall where she said she has seen unmasked customers not adhering to distancing requirements and “sharing the air.”
“We’ve watched the last week of the shutdown be completely irresponsible and unfair, while indoor retailers are wide open,” she said. “We’ve been told we have to close our outdoor dining, which is our little bit of income we’ve been able to sustain by keeping the outdoors open.”
Nasser-Elddin said her restaurant is safe, because they have “done it for nine months.”
“So we know that the guidelines work if you let us apply the guidelines and stay safe, there’s no problem here,” she said, adding that the restaurant cannot survive the winter solely on to-go orders.
