The sighting was reported at approximately 7:33 a.m. by a resident who lives at the 1100 block of Valencia Way, according to a police press release. The resident told authorities that the lion took one of the chickens from their coup and retreated to a nearby hillside.

Officers arrived on the scene to find the big cat approximately 30 yards behind the house, consuming the chicken.

Immediate neighbors were advised not to go into their backyards and bring inside any of their pets.

Since officers determined that the adult mountain lion "did not appear to pose a threat to human life," the California Department of Wildlife Management advised them to simply monitor the animal’s activity until it "returned into the open space surrounding the area."

An officer from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife responded to the scene to speak with the resident.

Pacifica police stayed with the resident until approximately 9:44 a.m. when the lion left the area.
