Paul Flores convicted of murdering Cal Poly student Kristin Smart in 1992

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – A jury has found Paul Flores guilty of first degree murder in connection with the decades-old, highly publicized disappearance of missing Cal Poly San Luis Obispo student Kristin Smart.

Meanwhile Flores' father, Ruben Flores, was acquitted of being an accessory to murder for allegedly helping his son burry Smart's body.

The verdicts were announced in Monterey County Superior Court in Salinas on Tuesday afternoon, ending an over 26 year old case.

Smart on May 25, 1996 left an off-campus party at approximately 2 a.m. accompanied by Flores and was never seen again. She was 19. Her body has never been found. Smart's family had her declared legally dead in 2002.

Paul Flores and his father Ruben Flores were arrested in April, 2021 in connection with Smart's disappearance. Paul Flores was charged with murder while Flores was charged with being an accessory after the fact.
