At 3:50 a.m., the roof over one corner of the warehouse caved, likely due to the weight of rainwater. As all the water rushed out of the building it ripped the front doors off, carrying chunks of drywall and pieces of office furniture into the parking lot.

The warehouse is a distribution center for the Bay Area company Peet's Coffee, which rents the space.

"It's heartbreaking, it's an unbelievable tragedy," Peet's spokesperson Mary O'Connell told KCBS Radio. "Our distribution lead, a long-time employee at Peet's, was here getting ready for the day sitting in the office and there was a partial collapse of the roof over the office area."

The employee was killed and one other person was injured in the collapse.

70 people were scheduled to report for the first shift at 4 a.m., 10 minutes after the tragic incident. They would have walked right through the entrance — an office which is now torn up and open to the sky.

O’Connell said it is horrible that one of their employees died, but if it had happened just 10 minutes later, it could have been a lot worse.
