Maui no longer requires a booster shot for people to be considered fully vaccinated

Fully vaccinated people no longer have to be boosted in Maui, according to reporting by local outlet KHON.

Maui Mayor Michael Victorino made the announcement last week, and the new guideline went into effect on Monday as hospitalizations and case numbers have declined, the station reported.

Proof of vaccination is still required for people to dine indoors or spend time in a gym, but "the showing of proof of updated vaccinated including boosters to dine in restaurants will no longer be required," said Victorino, according to the station.

The new announcement comes just after Maui made the booster a requirement last month, the station also reported, where fully vaccinated included the booster.

Maui was the first in Hawaii to enact such a measure, and it was met with criticism and backlash from those in the restaurant industry when it was announced.

"Kind of the sentiment is, it's another nail in the coffin for them as small business owners and restauranteurs in Maui County," said Hawaii Restaurant Industry Maui board member Tambara Garrick to the station when the measure was enacted.

Now Victorino has rolled back the requirement, and while some, like Garrick, are pleased, others are frustrated by how the confusion has hurt their business.

"We dealt with a decline in sales, and upset customers," said Javier Barberi, the owner of a local restaurant Mala Tavern, to the station.
