SONOMA, Calif. (KCBS RADIO) – It was a chilling sight on the Sonoma Plaza Monday morning, as someone wearing a black-hooded Scream costume stood perfectly still on a corner in the rain.

The person dressed in the black robe and a white Scream mask caused some commotion at The Corner Store — a gift shop a stone's throw away from the hooded figure.

"She was very traumatized by it," said Kim, the owner of The Corner Store, speaking about the reaction from one of her customers. "It is right in front of our store and it looks very creepy. He was in the pouring down rain."

The Sonoma Police Department received multiple calls for service on Monday due to the Scream costume. In a Facebook post, the department said they talked to the individual and discovered they had been fired by a promotional company to get people talking about the new Scream movie coming out next month. The movie is the sixth in the franchise.

Parts of the original film were shot just a few blocks from the Sonoma Plaza. "I'm not a fan of scary movies, but if anything exciting happens in downtown Sonoma, I am all for it," Kim said.

The owner of Town Square Sports Bar a few doors down had a similar sentiment. "So I walked outside and took a look myself," said Terry. "I just thought it was some crazy lady walking around town having some fun."
