The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office on Friday confirmed to KCBS Radio that Birgit Almgren, 80, was the dead woman Petaluma police found when conducting a welfare check on Aug. 23.

Petaluma police performed a wellness check on the 200 block of Windsor Avenue on the morning of Aug. 23 after receiving reports that a resident hadn’t been seen for several weeks. Neighbors said as many as 30 packages sat on the porch.

Police said officers entered the home after "numerous attempts to contact the resident … were unsuccessful." Once inside, officers found Almgren in the living room and her daughter in an upstairs bedroom.

Almgren's daughter said her mother had died of natural causes last April. The Sheriff's Office didn't say whether the autopsy confirmed or contradicted those claims.

The Petaluma Police Department told KRON that Almgren's daughter had barely left her home since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, although police didn't tell the station whether the pandemic motivated her to stay home.

"Based on statements made, detectives believe she has not left the house, other than to go to the mailbox, since the beginning of March of 2020," Petaluma Police Lt. Jeremy Walsh told the outlet. "All her living essentials were ordered online and having them delivered to the home. This included daily meal deliveries."

Walsh didn't respond to KCBS Radio's request for comment prior to publication.

Petaluma city officials deemed the home uninhabitable shortly after the August wellness check, red-tagging the house and making it a misdemeanor to enter the premises. It's unclear where Almgren's daughter is now staying.
