Customers of Marie Callender's were surprised to find it shuttered on Monday.
By the time Blanca Brown arrived at the Blossom Hill Road location, a team was already working out back to empty the restaurant. Out front, a very discouraging cardboard sign read "sold out of pies."

"Here we have a successful restaurant that we love and sold pies that were wonderful and now they're closing," she told KCBS Radio. "We are very disappointed and sad."
Franchise owner Ron Garald told The Mercury News that business has been difficult due to the coronavirus pandemic's impact on the economy and that he he "tried like heck" to keep it open, but wasn't able to do so.
For Brown and other long-time customers, this last San Jose location offered up more than food and sweet desserts. Its large meeting room also meant that it served as a local community hub. "As a matter of fact, we used to have quite a few women's bible studies here and just gather and enjoy the fellowship," she added.

The Marie Calendar's chain of restaurants has its roots in Southern California.
This closing leaves the only remaining Bay Area franchise in Sunnyvale.
