The animation studio giant, headquartered in Emeryville, announced on Friday plans to produce "Inside Out 2," a sequel to the Academy-Award winning 2015 film "Inside Out," which starred Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Mindy Kaling, Lewis Black and others stars.
Poehler made a brief appearance at Disney's "D23 Expo" last week to debut the news.
The original 2015 film followed the journey of a young girl named Riley, who moved with her family from a small suburban Minnesota town to San Francisco for her father's new tech job. The movie focuses on and personifies her emotions (Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger) as she navigates this sudden change in her life.
Pixar officials confirmed to SFGATE that the upcoming sequel will be set in San Francisco. It will follow Riley as a teenager living in the city who experiences a different and broader range of emotions, with an expanded cast yet to be announced.
"Inside Out" featured multiple Bay Area references, including appearing to parody the iconic Berkeley pizza parlor "The Cheeseboard Collective" by having Riley visit a pizza shop that only serves one topping, broccoli. The Cheeseboard serves one type of pizza per day and is entirely vegetarian.
"Inside Out 2" will be directed by Kelsey Mann ("The Good Dinosaur" and "Lightyear"), and Meg LeFauve, who co-wrote the screenplay to Inside Out, returns to write the sequel.
The movie is set to be released in the summer of 2024.
