He was then attacked by a man riding a bicycle, hit and punched repeatedly, then knocked to the ground. Chew was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He reportedly suffered from a badly bruised eye, a broken shoulder and went unconscious at the scene.

Derrick Yearby, 34, was arrested just before 11:30 a.m. in the area of 8th and Market Streets on Sunday after he was recognized as matching the description of the suspect.

Yearby was booked into the San Francisco County Jail. He's facing charges of aggravated battery causing serious bodily injury, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, elder abuse, and great bodily injury enhancement.

It's not clear yet if race was a motivating factor in the crime, according to SFPD spokesperson Kathryn Winters.

"That can certainly change depending on interviews with the suspect, but as of right now based on the circumstances in the initial incident, nothing was said or done during the incident that would allow us to charge with a hate crime," Winters said.

However, this is not the first time Yearby has been on the police's radar, and there will be follow-up investigations into his possible connection to other attacks on members of the Asian community.
