Sacramento K9 requires emergency surgery after being stabbed during arrest

A Sacramento police dog is recovering after the animal was stabbed on Friday night during a confrontation with a suspect.

Officers arrived at the residence of 58-year-old Hans Schroeder in the 5300 block of 9th Ave. at around 8:30 p.m. Schroeder had an active felony warrant for stalking and a threats charge, the Sacramento Police Department said.

When officers attempted to make contact with the man, he fled out the back door of the property with a knife. A K9 named Ranger and an officer apprehended Schroeder, but during the commotion Ranger was stabbed in the stomach.

Ranger was immediately transported to VCA Sacramento Veterinary Referral Center for emergency surgery. Thankfully, he is expected to make a full recovery, the department said in a statement.

Schroeder was transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries from K9 Ranger.  He was booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail for his active warrant and charges related to assaulting a police canine.
