Quiet at nearby Keller Beach as crews continue clean-up from Chevron spill

It’s a quiet day along the shore near Point Richmond two days after an oil spill at the Chevron Refinery.

Only a few walkers and joggers are using the pathway along Dornan Dr. that overlooks the bay and the small Keller Beach directly below. Greg Grove lives nearby and doesn’t think the cloudy skies have anything to do with it.

"Even on a cold day there’d be probably a lot more people here," he told KCBS Radio. "You can see there’s almost no cars at all when there’s usually several along this way."

Keller Beach is closed after some of the fuel-water mix that was dumped into the bay during Tuesday’s spill at the refinery washed ashore.

However, Eric Laughlin with the state’s Department of Fish and Wildlife said the fuel is breaking down.

"There is a light sheen in some areas near Keller Beach, but it’s definitely dissipated," he said. "There (is) wildlife out there, but they don’t appear to be in the sheen. We won’t have any wildlife impacts at this time."

Crews continue to monitor to make sure there’s no lingering oil coming ashore. Hundreds of gallons were spilled – an estimated 750 gallons - and Laughlin expected the clean-up to be done within the next few days.
