Rallies were held across California on Friday to encourage state leaders to allow more youth sports to resume.

Let Them Play CA and the Golden Gate State Football Coaches Community said resuming sports safely during the COVID-19 pandemic is important for kids’ mental and physical health.

Serra High School Football Coach Patrick Walsh held a letter signed by 57 physicians from across the state supporting a safe return to play.

“We want a seat at the table with Dr. Ghaly,” he said. “We need to communicate this pressing issue that is affecting our kids. We’re running out of time.”

Proponents of a return to sports pointed out sports offer structure and community.

Last September, Skyline High School football player Aaron Pryor was shot 15 times and killed in East Oakland.

Skyline Coach Joe Bates told KCBS Radio that football is a brotherhood, and now some boys are finding unhealthy groups.

“I’m struggling big time with keeping these kids engaged,” he said.

It’s not just football players.

A swimmer and water polo athlete said she feels isolated.

“I miss racing,” she added. “I miss playing games. I miss the big meets.”

The non-profit, non-political group Let Them Play CA has more than 52,000 members.

Rallies calling for a safe return to sports have been held throughout the state and more are planned.
