Nobody was injured in a fire at Recology San Francisco's transfer station that was contained Monday afternoon.
San Francisco firefighters extinguished a fire in the agency's sorting warehouse at 501 Tunnel Ave. The fire was caused by an improperly disposed lithium battery, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.
A "large pile" of metals caught fire, according to department spokesperson Lt. Jonathan Baxter.
Baxter told KCBS Radio's Patti Reising in a Wednesday afternoon interview that the fire's smoke didn’t contain any toxins, but residents in the smoke's path wanting to be safer should close their windows, stay indoors and set their air conditioners to recirculate.
Recology’s safety plan, developed in coordination with fire officials, ensured the building was evacuated by the time firefighters arrived. Baxter said Recology "regularly" coordinates with the department on the plan.
