On March 31 the state will stop accepting applications for its rent relief program and the remaining eviction protections will run out. Housing advocate Francisco Duenas is leading a statewide call to extend the assistance for renters.

"A majority of those 270,000 their application have yet to be reviewed," he said.

Jenise Dixon is a renter pleading for help. She said after two years of economic disruptions she still needs more time to recover.

"So, we are just asking people at the top, the lawmakers to give this system a chance to catch up so people like me don't fall through the cracks," she said.

State officials are arguing that California's rental assistance program has been one of the largest and most successful in the country, pushing back against claims that payments have been too slow.
