For this first time in two years, NASCAR will return to Sonoma Raceway.
The Toyota-Savemart-350 will be held the weekend of June 15 with reduced attendance, social distancing and other safety measures.
Before the county entered the orange tier several weeks ago, staff at Sonoma Raceway were not even sure there would be a NASCAR event this June.
Raceway Communications Director Jennifer Imbimbo said the race will be a different experience for spectators.
"We’ll have seats of two to ten people, but around those seats there will be approximately 18 vacant seats around those areas," she said. "All tickets will be digital this year. There’s no paper tickets or touching of anyone’s tickets, so everything will be scanned."
Imbimbo said technically Sonoma Raceway holds 47,000 spectators in its stands, but that doesn’t include tens of thousands of others who view the NASCAR event from other areas including hospitality tents and suites.
Attendance will be limited to 15,000 people, but that could increase if the county moves into the less restrictive yellow tier before the event takes place.
"Fans are out there looking for their tickets now, but we have to wait to get our capacity requirements down and see how many we can actually seat once everybody’s purchased a ticket and then move forward," Imbimbo said.
