San Francisco was ranked as the seventh best U.S. city to ride a bike nude in, according to a study that was released on Wednesday by lawnstarter.com.
The website evaluated the 200 largest U.S. cities across a variety of metrics including the existence of a nudist movement, a naked biking community within that movement, the size of the cycling community as a whole, the likelihood of getting arrested riding a bike in your birthday suit, weather and more.
"Extremely cold days, historical number of extremely hot days, and the average monthly inches of rain, and the average amount of sunshine. This is where San Francisco always does amazing," Jeff Herman, the website’s editor, told KCBS Radio.
San Francisco finished ranked highest in hosting naked bike rides (1), number of bike meetups (4), bike score (7) and historical number of extremely cold days (1).
Herman also pointed out that their research indicated San Franciscans over the last 12 months frequently looked into nude biking related topics on Google, searching for phrases like "world naked bike ride" and "naked bike ride."
KCBS Radio visited a Mission District biking hotspot on Thursday to ask customers about their thoughts on the study and riders were categorically against the idea of pedaling in the nude.
"I just think of my bike seat as more of something like a straddle, and when you’re doing that you want everything to kind of be held together," one male biker at the shop said. "There's too much rubbing going on when you’re biking, so I can’t see it as a comfortable ride."
Bike safety was also a main concern for those asked about potentially riding nude.
"Maybe wear a helmet and then you’re technically not naked," one bike enthusiast said.
World Naked Bike Rides take place between June and September, but are organized throughout the year in San Francisco.
