Milpitas Police spokesperson, Lt. Tyler Jamison, told KCBS Radio that officers were dispatched to a home on Daniel Court due to a report of an unresponsive man at 2:49 p.m, and announced him dead on arrival. Jamison said the department is not releasing the victim's identity at this time, though public records indicate that's where Packer lived. Multiple outlets have reported that the victim was Packer.

An investigation into his death is ongoing and no other details have been released, Jamison said. Milpitas Police and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner are working together to determine a cause of death.

A spokesperson for the Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office told KCBS Radio the cause and manner of death is still pending.

Packer, 24-years-old and a San Jose native, was a standout running back at Gunderson High School. He originally attended San Jose City College for two years before transferring to San Jose State in 2017 to finish his college career. In his third and final season with the Spartans, Packer led the team in rushing yards and touchdowns, including scoring the game-winning touchdowns against Arkansas and Fresno State.

In the wake of his death, San Jose State's football team tweeted a video of his dramatic score against Arkansas with the caption: "One of the biggest plays in recent history.. RIP Pack."

"We are deeply saddened by the news of DeJon Packer. The San José State Football family has suffered a great loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with DeJon's family & friends." the team said in a statement. "Forever a Spartan."

After earning his degree in health science, Packer attended the San Jose Police Academy, graduating last year.

"Our police family is devastated by the sudden loss of Officer DeJon Packer who passed away last night," San Jose Police said in a statement on Twitter. "He was beloved by the San Jose community and was a celebrated former SJSU football player… Please keep DeJon and his family in your prayers."
