Sacramento Sheriff's deputy remembered for 'selfless sacrifice' after deadly officer-involved shooting

A Sacramento Sheriff's deputy was shot and killed Monday night in an officer-involved shooting near Cal Expo.

A second deputy was wounded, and a police K-9 was also killed.

The suspect was shot and killed by officers who returned fire.

"Jennifer and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Sheriff’s Deputy (Adam) Gibson and the departmental canine who lost their lives in this tragic incident," the governor said in a statement Tuesday afternoon. "Deputy Gibson will forever be remembered for his selfless sacrifice and his commitment to providing safety and security for the Sacramento community."

The second deputy was taken to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment.

Gibson, 31, was a six-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. He previously served in the U.S. Marine Corps and did two tours of duty in Afghanistan.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel, and a nine-month-old child.

Flags at the state Capitol will be flown at half-staff.

The incident is under investigation.
