According to the National Weather Service, it's the earliest red flag warning that has ever been declared.
"We have had some red flags issued in the month of January but that was sort of on the tail end of the prior season," Sierra Littlefield, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento, told KCBS Radio. "So, this is our first red flag warning in terms of the start of the spring season that we have issued."
The Bay Area will mostly be spared, with just a portion of Solano County will be under a red flag warning.
The warning will remain in effect through 5 p.m. on Sunday. The warm weather combined with 30-40 mph winds means the perpetual fire watch in Northern California.
"We're expecting very dry conditions with gusty winds in the Sacramento Valley and we also have unseasonably dry fuels, and so if you do all the combinations of these factors, we will be seeing some elevated fire concerns," she explained.
Despite the heightened fire risk over the weekend, Littlefield said things will shift back very quickly.
"We actually will be seeing these dry and dusty conditions Saturday into Sunday, and then quickly thereafter we'll see quite a cooldown in temperatures as well as some chances for showers and mountain snow," she said.
