The Salt Fire, which has ravaged Shasta County along Interstate 5, was caused by materials which flew off a vehicle according to fire investigators.

The wildfire, sparked Wednesday afternoon, has charred 5,043 acres and is at 5% containment.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, very hot materials flew off a vehicle driving northbound on I-5 and landed in dry vegetation which sparked the blaze.

The Redding Record Searchlight said around a dozen buildings, including some homes, have burned in the Salt Fire near the community of Lakehead, much of which had to be evacuated.

The fire is only 10 or 15 miles south of the Lava Fire.

Investigators are asking the public for help in locating the vehicle that ignited the blaze, which was most likely driving in rightmost northbound lane near the Gilman Rd. off-ramp around 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Anyone with information is asked to call (530) 226-2783.
