San Francisco is the second-worst run city in the United States in 2022, according to a study published last week by WalletHub, a finance website.
Out of 150 of the largest cities in the country, San Francisco came in at second to last, beat out only by Washington, D.C. Another Bay Area city, Oakland, came in at 8th worst.
The study measured each city's "operating efficiency" by running 38 different metrics, grouped into six service categories, which were then compared to the city per-capita budget.
The six service categories are: financial stability, education, health, safety, economy and infrastructure and pollution.
Those were broken down into the smaller metrics, such as high school graduation rates under education, average life span under health, or number of vehicle fatalities under safety.
These were evaluated and graded, and given weight depending on the category.
Despite its low ranking, San Francisco did score very high in some areas, coming in at number 16 in the ranking based on just the quality of city services. It also had the second lowest infant mortality rate, just after San Jose.
"The city is able to offer its residents high quality services, but its budget is the second largest, which is what dragged it down," WalletHub spokesperson Diana Polk told SFGATE. "SF is spending more money than other cities to offer its services."
San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose did rank as the lowest in terms of quality of roads, with San Francisco being the worst.
The top best cities in the United States wound up being on the smaller size, such as Nampa, Idaho, which came in first, followed by Boise, Idaho and Fort Wayne, Indiana.
