What may be the biggest avocado tree in the country is bearing fruit in San Francisco's Pacific Heights neighborhood.

In the backyard of Ammar Swalim hardware store at 2828 California St., a 60 foot tree looms, bursting with large avocados.

"I've seen avocado trees that are 10, 15 feet," Swalim told KCBS Radio. "I've never seen them that big and I was shocked and surprised that a tree like this grows in San Francisco."

He explained that the city's moderately cold and foggy climate is not ideal for avocado trees, and yet, some have said that the tree is the biggest of its kind in the United States.

The base of the tree has stretched to a massive six feet across and the avocados grow so high that Swalim can't pick them, so he must wait for them to fall.

When the fruit does rain down by the dozens, Swalim gives them away to lucky neighbors.
