During a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday morning, San Francisco Community Health opened the doors to its new 8,000 square foot Trans Thrive Center at 730 Polk St., which CEO Lance Toma described as a refuge for the trans community.
Supporters hope the facility will be a safe space amidst growing animosity across the United States towards gender affirming care.
"It's a sanctuary, it's a safe space where trans and gender non-conforming folks can come, access services, find community, a sense of belonging, healing, wellness," Toma said.
San Francisco Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin said Lower Polk has a long history with the trans community. "This is not a welcome, this is a welcome back," he said. "And it gives me hope that the city's initiative to end trans homelessness in a very short period of time is achievable and realistic."
