The new Presidio Tunnel Tops is 2-acres of the 14-acre Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the Presidio Trust release said. The park is equipped with a “nature play area” for kids to run around and play on the structures built from natural elements like fallen trees, boulders and more, the release said.
The Crissy Field Center has been renovated and the new Field station has transformed into an indoor area where kids can explore art and science. The area is for all ages and provides self-guided and programmed activities, the release said.
According to Presidio Trust, the park has been in the making for 10 years with community organizations, health leaders and park planners to make an interactive national park. In 2019, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy was funded $98 million for the project.
The Presidio put together a council of Bay Area community leaders, activists and artists to help design the park. The council will also incorporate art, culture, food, health, wellness and music.
The other 12 acres of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area will have scenic overlooks, trails, picnic spaces and gathering areas with views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the city, the presidio said. The park will be easily accessible with a transit center for guests as well as a visitor center, food, a pavilion and fire pits in designated areas.
