San Francisco Police initially responded to reports of an unconfirmed shooting at 7th and Market Streets at 5:05 p.m., officer Kathryn Winters tweeted. However, authorities were unable to locate any victims or witnesses and determined there was no merit to those reports.
San Francisco Pride released a statement later that night clarifying what happened. During a performance on the main stage at Civic Center, a person "sprayed mace into the crowd," officials said. Nobody was hurt, though officials acknowledged it "was an unpleasant experience" and they decided to cut the performance short in "the interest of safety."
Winters told SFGATE she was unsure of where the reports of a shooting came from.
The incident caused a frantic end to what was otherwise a peaceful return to the first in-person Pride celebration since 2019.
KGO reported a "heavy police presence" was used to break up fights and disperse the crowd after the mace was sprayed.
No other information was available, including regarding a possible suspect. KCBS Radio reached out to San Francisco Police for more information and did not receive a reply as of publication.
