Temporary transit lanes on San Francisco’s Mission St. downtown will soon become permanent.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Board of Directors earlier this month approved making transit lanes on Mission St. between 3rd and 11th Streets permanent. The lanes only allow for bus and taxi traffic.
Commuters on the 14 Mission and 14R Mission Rapid lanes ride in the area, as do many SamTrans and Golden Gate Transit riders. Public Information Officer Erin McMillan wrote Monday that commuters "will be able to get to their destination faster and more reliably" because the lanes are now permanent.
The agency said traffic has risen 20% in the area since last summer, but transit times have "stayed relatively consistent."
This fall, the agency will make transit lanes full-time between 1st and 3rd Streets. It will also begin extending bus zones.
