Attendees of events at San Jose-owned venues with at least 50 people, including San Jose Sharks games, must now provide proof of a COVID-19 booster or a negative test.
After the San Jose City Council unanimously passed Mayor Sam Liccardo's proposal last month, the requirement took effect on Friday. Previously, the city required proof of full vaccination, without the option to provide a negative test result.
The ordinance applies to events with 50 or more attendees at all city-owned facilities, including SAP Center, San Jose City Hall, San Jose McEnery Convention Center, California Theatre, Montgomery Theater, San Jose Civic and the Tech Interactive.
Sporting events, concerts, conventions and movie screenings at Tech all fall under the ordinance, according to the city. SAP Center's first concert scheduled with the ordinance in effect is set for Saturday, while the first Sharks game is Feb. 14.
Attendees can submit proof of vaccination without proof of a booster dose if they aren't yet eligible. Children aged 5-11 can provide proof of full vaccination, as can anyone 12 and older who received their second dose of a two-dose vaccine series within 5.5 months of attending the event. Adults who received their only dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
