During the investigation of 61-year-old Naeem Islam Hashmi for sexual assault allegations, the detectives found a third victim from 2016, the Palo Alto Police Department said in a release. A former employee of Hashmi reported that she was sexually assaulted while they were both working at Crescent Medical Center in San Jose. He was charged with one felony count of "sexual penetration by force" on June 1, the Santa Clara County Office of the District Attorney told KCBS Radio.
In August 2021, the initial investigation began when a woman – now in her twenties – reported that she had been sexually assaulted multiple times by Hashmi when she was 12 and 13 years old, officers reported. The investigation showed that her friend had also been a victim around the same time.
In December of 2021, a Santa Clara County Superior Court judge signed a warrant for Hashmi's arrest and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Officer charged him with four felony counts of lewd acts on a child under the age of 14, the District Attorney confirmed. He was arrested at his Palo Alto residence on December 21, 2021.
The two young victims from this case were not Hashmi's patients but knew him through the community and family connections, police said in a release.
One of the assault charges happened while the victim was volunteering at the suspect's medical office in San Jose.
Police think there could be more victims who have not come forward and encouraged anyone who may have been victimized to contact the Palo Alto Police Department.
Hashmi was arranged in February and his next court date is June 11, the Mercury News reported.
