San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo says he will take quick action to prevent future mass shootings after nine people died at a VTA facility on Wednesday, including the gunman.
"Our heart pains for the families and the coworkers because we know that so many are feeling deeply this loss of their loved ones and their friends. Now is a moment for us to collect ourselves, to understand what happened, to mourn and to help those who have suffered to heal. That will be my attention today and for the foreseeable future," Liccardo said.
The mayor said that more information will be released before the end of the week about how he hopes to prevent future tragedies.
"My attention will then be immediately turned to ensuring we do everything possible to ensure this never happens again in our city. And in the next 48 hours I will be back in communication with you to talk about what we’ve been working on in the next year and a half and what we intend to do in the weeks to come to ensure we never see a horrific tragedy like this again in San Jose."
Liccardo did not provide more details about the proposals he may be referring to or what he sees as the cause.
However, Liccardo has previously put forth a first-in-the-nation proposal to require gun owners to either carry liability insurance or pay fees to cover the taxpayer costs of gun violence.
Liccardo unveiled that proposal in 2019, two weeks after three people were killed and 17 others injured in a mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival.
"We are in a very dark moment, but I am heartened to see the response of the VTA family coming together to help their coworkers. We’re going to do everything we can to support the families of those who have lost their loved ones," he said.
"I am grateful for the immediate response of law enforcement led by the sheriff’s office who were able to secure the scene and ensure there would be no more loss of life."
