Two suspects in a fatal shooting on Halloween have since been released without bail, and San Jose police are not happy about the decision.

"Our community deserves better, the victim’s family deserve better," wrote San Jose police in a tweet following the decision on Tuesday. "The taking of someone’s life is the ultimate crime. The system has failed."

Efrain Anzures, 27, and Alfred Castillo, 26, were being held for the murder of Isiah Gonzalez, who was killed on Halloween during a road rage incident in South San Jose.

"The victim’s families actually phoned and contacted the detectives handling this case to express their outrage and disappointment that these two are literally right back out where they were the day they killed their family member," said San Jose Police Sergeant Christian Camarillo.

The police department as well as Mayor Sam Liccardo have expressed disapproval of the suspects’ release under a program called the Supervised Own Recognizance Program, or SORP.

"The courts sometimes believe that this person will show up to court when they’re supposed to given the fact that they’ve had no part in the system before," said Camarillo. "However, for it to be used on two homicide suspects, it’s unheard of."

San Jose Police Chief Anthony Mata also said that it’s demoralizing for the department’s detectives to see the people they’ve arrested walking free just a few days later.

Efrain Anzures is facing charges for murder and Alfred Castillo has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
