SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – San Leandro's Bayfair mall sold this past summer after retailers steadily closed up shop over the last two decades despite its central location and proximity to BART.

Now there are new plans afoot for the large 42-acre parcel.

Some stores won’t be involved in the $57 million sale, like Target, as it owns that location in the mall. The Macy’s at that location will likely stick around as well.

"We're excited over time to see the mall site develop into more of a walkable, pedestrian-friendly transit village," said Avalon Schultz, the Principal Planner with the city of San Leandro.

According to Schultz, the area could become mixed-use with offices, retail and housing.

The plan will take into account, "changing trends in retail and the proximity of the site to a BART station," she said. "We set forth a plan for a mixed-use transit village with a lot of flexibility given market trends."

The owners have a stake in the success – as they’ve leased out some of the space to start-ups and other small businesses.
