In a recent teleconference Congresswoman, Jackie Speier shared the latest COVID-19 data.
"San Mateo County has actually seen a 41% increase in cases since last week," Speier said.
Post-prom and post-spring break 62 students at San Mateo High School have tested positive for COVID-19 this week as of Thursday, which is nearly 4% of the student population. Sarah Devaney, Health Services Manager of the San Mateo Union High School District told KCBS Radio that testing at the high school has been ramped up.
"For us, it feels like this is happening overnight, that we are seeing such a dramatic increase this week compared to other weeks," Devaney said.
Generally, COVID positive students and staff are experiencing mild symptoms of congestion, fatigue and headache. Devaney emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle during the pandemic.
"Continuing to test, continuing to stay home when they have symptoms, really good hand washing," she said. "We are still one of those schools that are wearing masks at least indoors during instruction, and so for us right now when we are seeing this uptake in cases that's going to be important as well."
