Santa Clara County receives vaccine windfall

Officials in Santa Clara County say they have received a windfall in the form of thousands more vaccine doses.

Santa Clara County is the most populous county in the Bay Area and has struggled to keep up with demand in recent weeks as eligibility expanded widely.

"For many, many weeks and months we have been hampered by this low supply of vaccine when it comes to how much we can get in arms," said Dr. Ahmad Kamal with the county.

But late Sunday, associate chief medical officer Dr. Jennifer Tong in the county health department announced the county received a huge influx of supply.

"One of the challenges we've had over the last almost six weeks now is not having enough vaccine and not wanting to have people just sitting completely idle. So there's a bit of a ramp up pace for us to bring in even more staff to reach our full capacity."

Thousands more appointments have been added and county officials expect to have another 10,000 doses available just for this weekend.

Everyone who is 16 and older and lives or works in the county is eligible, and officials are urging people to visit the sccfreevax.org website to sign up.

More than 57% of county residents 16 and older have received a first dose and more than 31% are fully vaccinated.
