But some officials in Santa Clara County are pushing for its COVID-19 vaccination program to continue.

As of the beginning of this month, the vaccination clinic is only available at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center sites, and for some, that’s just not enough.

"We've got to keep helping folks who need the help and we've got to stay nimble so that we can ramp up quickly if the need arises again," said Santa Clara Supervisor Joe Simitian.

Simitian and fellow Supervisor Otto Lee are calling for the county to continue its COVID-19 vaccination program.

"And while a lot of folks can go to their healthcare provider or their local pharmacy – that's just not an option for some of our neighbors who maybe don’t have health insurance, or who have health insurance but can't always count on timely access through their healthcare provider," said Simitian.

Since late 2020 in the height of the pandemic, the county has distributed almost 2 million vaccine doses at a number of different pop-up sites.

"If it turns out that this becomes an annual thing, sort of like our flu vaccination program," he said. "Then maybe the plan for the future includes pairing the two shots."

“We’ll see,” he added.

The supervisors will be considering a continued plan in April.
