A falling tree crushed the woman on Sunday at Rancho San Antonio County Park & Open Space Preserve in Cupertino.

The scout troop from Sunnyvale was hiking when a tree fell across the trail, pinning one of the scout moms.

Other adults present were able to lift the tree off of her enough, propping it up with a rock, so that she was no longer stuck.

Fire crews arrived and were able to extricate the woman from under the tree but she later died from her injuries.

“It’s just an unfortunate tragedy,” Chief Ranger Matt Anderson with the Midpeninsula Open Space District told KPIX.

"That you go out for a hike in a relatively calm morning, and you have this kind of thing happen," he said.

The danger of falling trees will only increase this week with another atmospheric river on the way to the Bay Area.

It's expected to hit Thursday and continue into Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service, this will be a warmer system, which could lead to more snow melt.

This is concerning for the lower elevation areas that saw a lot of snow. With rain on top of that, there could be excessive runoff and flooding.
